12 Day Kalahari & Okavango Botswana Highlight Safari

During this safari we will stay in 2 very different parts of Botswana – namely, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Okavango Delta.

One will immediately see the difference between the water wonder-world of the lush Okavango Delta (know for its perfectly located wildlife sanctuary and wonderful scenery) and the arid desert areas of the Kalahari with its special desert-adapted plants and wildlife.

Both these areas are awe-inspiring, but for totally different reasons. We will spend most of our time camping in large safari tents with en-suite facilities. Our days will consist mainly of game-viewing during the early mornings and late afternoons. During the heat of the day, we will have time for rest and relaxation back at camp.

This safari commences and terminates in Maun, Botswana.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Maun

Upon arrival at Maun Airport, you will be met by your safari guide and transferred to your campsite. A light lunch will be served in camp. Maun is a small town on the southern side of the Okavango Delta, utilised by many tour companies and safari operators as the starting point for various kinds of adventures.

This afternoon you have the option of taking a game-flight in a light aircraft over the Okavango delta (duration of the flight is approx. 1hour). In order to understand the geological aspect of the Delta as well as to see various species of game, this optional activity is highly recommended. Overnight in accessible chalets at Island Safari Lodge – L/D.

Day 2, 3 and 4: Central Kalahari Game Reserve

After an early breakfast, we depart Maun, heading southwards to enter the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The following four nights’ stay in the park will solve some of the mysteries surrounding life in this arid region.

The Kalahari and its adapted game and vegetation have succeeded in surviving the elements and their story is plain for those who wish to understand. Predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena occur here as well as water independent antelope, such as Oryx and Springbok.

The combination of Kalahari and Okavango on one safari will clearly illustrate the importance of water to an area. The Kalahari is one of the remotest and most unspoilt areas of Africa, with a size of 52 800 square kilometers. Overnight in accessible en-suite safari tent – B/L/D.

Day 5: Maun

Today we return to Maun for one night in order to prepare for the Okavango sector of our safari. A late afternoon excursion to a nearby crocodile farm can be arranged if desired. Overnight in accessible chalets at Island Safari Lodge – B/L/D.

Day 6: Okavango Delta – Moremi Game Reserve

After an early breakfast, we depart Maun for our next destination - Moremi Game Reserve - situated in the eastern part of the Okavango Delta. This game reserve is ideally situated for a wildlife sanctuary. It has no fences, hence allowing unobstructed seasonal movement of game which makes this a largely natural area. This is a paradise for birds, game and predators alike.

Moremi’s scenery alone is enough reason to want to visit this park. Completely varied vegetation makes this area very special. Within an hours’ travelling it is possible to view the first of the wildlife inhabiting this area. We will stop en-route for a simple lunch of sandwiches and fruit, before continuing towards our camp. Late afternoon arrival at our camp, with enough time to settle in before having our evening meal. Afterwards we will relax around the campfire, where your guide will explain the safety precautions and will answer your various questions in order to calm your understandable apprehension for the coming days. Overnight in accessible en-suite safari tent – B/L/D.

Day 7: Okavango Delta – Moremi Game Reserve

Our first morning in the Delta - it will be an early rise, with coffee and some biscuits around the fire at first light. Early morning departure from our camp in search of various predators (such as lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyaena) antelope (such as impala, lechwe, reedbuck, tsessebe) and other game such as giraffe, zebra, etc and of course also the birds that inhabit this area.

Hippos are abundant, in the streams and lagoons that make up vast areas of the Delta. We return to camp around 10:30 for Brunch. The early part of the afternoon is spent relaxing and reading in, and around the camp. Once it becomes cooler towards the late afternoon we once again depart on a game-drive, returning to camp after sunset for our second night in the wilds. Overnight in accessible en-suite safari tent – B/L/D.

Day 8: Okavango Delta – Moremi Game Reserve

A repeat of the previous days’ activities, allowing a full day to observe and understand the surrounding wilds. By the end of this day we will have explored the western part of Moremi in great detail. Overnight in accessible en-suite safari tent – B/L/D.

Days 9, 10 and 11: Okavango Delta – Moremi Game Reserve

Today we move our camp to the Khwai River area in the eastern part of Moremi. Our daily schedules remain the same, exploring and observing the animals in their natural state. The large floodplains of this area provide good grasses for various species of antelope, which are followed by the predators. The Khwai River forms the northern border of Moremi and this is where we will spend the majority of our time game-driving. Overnight in accessible en-suite safari tent – B/L/D.

Day 12:

This morning we depart Moremi and return to Maun. Picnic lunch will be served in town. Upon arrival in Maun, you will be transferred to the airport to connect with your outbound flight to Johannesburg.
